Cycle Soweto – and other fun things to do! | iinfo TZANEEN

Spend a half day rolling through the streets of Soweto on a bike tour that puts travellers in touch with local customs, traditions, culture and people. The different tours visit basically the same places, all depart from the Hector Pieterson Museum at 9:00 or 11:00, and ends there again four hours later. Depending on the activities and stops, the cycle tours are R400 or R500 per person.

The Soweto Bicycle Tour offer an optional bungee jump from the colourful Orlando Towers. The tours include local guides, a bicycle and helmet, yet exclude entrance fees to places of interest and pick-ups and drop-offs from hotels. Travellers who don't want to bungee can simply enjoy the view from 100m above the ground.

The tours also take cyclists through Soweto to experience everyday life in the South-Western Townships. One of the tours passes the Orlando Soccer Stadium, home to Orlando Pirates football club, on the way.

The Historical Bicycle Tour takes cycling tourists to places such as the Regina Mundi Catholic Church, a squatter camp and the now famous Vilakazi Street where two of the country's Nobel Prize winners, the late president Nelson Mandela, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, once lived.

The tours show where the township was first established in 1904 and participants are informed about the historic events which have changed and shaped the area, the country and its inhabitants since then.

On one route, there is a stop at a mine workers' hostel, an orphanage and several churches. Another stop is Orlando West High School, from where the student 1976-uprising took place. The unfortunate death of Hector Pieterson during the uprising where the police inevitably became involved, as they do with public shows of unrest, occurred here.

Another very popular pastime for visitors, local or from abroad, is a shebeen visit or tour. A shebeen is a typical pub or bar in the colloquial language. A Shebeen tour package could cost R 715 per person.

It would include transfers in a Quantum Vehicle (pick up and drop off in Johannesburg, outlying areas may carry a supplement), the services of a tour guide and coordinator (who will provide commentary throughout on Soweto's history and way of life), and visits to four different party venues in Soweto (ranging from rustic shebeens to upmarket pubs). Such tours will typically start mid-afternoon and end at 23:00. The price may include vouchers for drinks and a typical braai (barbeque) at one of the shebeens.

THE WORLDS FIRST BUNGEE JUMP BETWEEN TWO COOLING TOWERS!!

Strapping an expanding elastic cord around your ankles and jumping off a water tower is not for the faint-hearted, but for any adrenaline junkie a bungee jump is certainly one experience and adventure they won't forget! The Orlando Towers bungee jump is unique.

Only 6km from Orlando Soccer Stadium, is the FNB sport stadium, one of the hot spots during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, hosted by South Africa.
