Strategically placed on the Great North Road and halfway between Pretoria and the Zimbabwean border, this is the gateway city to the Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof areas, as well as the northern part of the Kruger National Park. It is the last outpost of highveld before the roads branch out from there to warmer, lower-lying areas such as Louis Trichardt and Mussina to the north and Tzaneen and Phalaborwa to the east.
The town was established in 1886 after the Voortrekkers arrived here to escape an oppressive regime in the Cape.
Polokwane (Pietersburg) has one international airport which links it to all the major South African cities with airports.
The area offers a pleasant climate for most of the year. With almost all year-round sunshine, summer months are hot (October to March) averaging 27ºC. The lowveld is less forgiving with towns such as Phalaborwa known to reach 45ºC. Generally, however, visitors to the Kruger National Park area can expect temperatures around 30ºC in summer.
Late afternoons can grow heavy with dark clouds and result in short thunderstorms. Winter is a sunny season of chilly, early mornings, warm middays, dry afternoons and cold nights.
Polokwane serves a rich agricultural district. Equal importance is attached to its art and culture and the city has an extensive art collection with public sculptures, museums and architecture. Apart from attractions within the city itself, a range of game reserves, including the Polokwane Game Reserve, lie virtually on the city’s doorstep.
