Polokwane – Place of Safety

Polokwane is the capitol of the Limpopo Province and the largest urban centre north of Gauteng. In the 1840’s Voortrekkers under the leadership of Andries Potgieter established Zoutpansbergdorp.
 
A town 100km to the North West. This settlement was abandoned because of clashes with the local tribes. They then founded a new town in 1886 and it Pietersburg, in honour of Petrus Jacobus Joubert, a Voortrekker leader. The British also built a concentration camp at Pietersburg during the Boer War that housed almost 4000 Boer women and children.
 

Welcome to Tzaneen - A tropical paradise in Limpopo Province

One of the local legends holds that it was King Makgoba himself who described the area where the town of Tzaneen is now situated as “Tzaneng – the happy land”.
 
Other explanations were that the name originated from the word “Tzana“ meaning ‘basket’, thus describing the way that the town of Tzaneen is surrounded by hills, filled by fruit and vegetables which are produced in abundance in the fertile valley,

North-West University Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden was originally created in the 1960’s for the use of the plants for learning and research purposes. Later by 1982 the garden was opened to the public after the garden was upgraded and developed by different personnel of the NWU. At the moment the Botanical Garden is estimated to have a span of almost 3 hectares. The most inhabitants of plant species are indigenous to South Africa but a small amount of exotic plant species is also situated in the garden.
