Blueberry Heights: Farm, Food and Fun
Blueberry Heights is, first and foremost, an organic farm about seven kilometres outside Haenertsburg. But Blueberry Heights is a lot more than just a farm; it’s a top Magoebaskloof tourist destination and gathering place for the community.
Blueberry Heights’ tree-lined drive leads not only to blueberry fields but also to the Mountain Cafe, a casual restaurant serving food made with seasonal, local ingredients (including blueberries, of course). Don’t leave without a generous slice of blueberry cheesecake.
The farm also offers accommodation — a delightful self-catering bungalow that serves as a perfect base for exploring the sights of Magoebaskloof. The Blueberry Heights cottage overlooks Ebenezer Dam and is flooded with golden light in the afternoons. Lucky cottage guests might receive a visit from Starbuck, one of Blueberry Heights’ well-behaved farm collies. (Book the Blueberry Heights cottage well in advance during the summer months.)
The farm offers blueberry-picking during the summer (Wednesday through Sunday in December, January, and February) and hosts the Magoebaskloof Berry Festival every year in early February. Blueberry Heights also hosts the monthly Magoebaskloof Farm Run, a five-kilometre walk/run around Blueberry Heights and the surrounding forests.
In addition to blueberries, Blueberry Heights recently introduced organic golden kiwis to its fields. Visit the shop on the farm to buy blueberries, kiwis, blueberry products made on the farm, and a selection of local art. Blueberry Heights’ produce is also sold in fruit and veg shops around the country and overseas.
Blueberry Heights is on the R71, seven kilometres northeast of Haenertsburg. Call Jonathan at 083-880-8787 or email jon@blueberryheights.co.za for more information.
