The Honey Ball Coffee Shop: Where Locals Go in Mokopane | iinfo TZANEEN

Every small town needs a gathering place — a place where people can meet up for coffee, eat, chat, and catch up on the events of the day. In Mokopane, a small town in the middle of Limpopo, that place is the Honey Ball Coffee Shop.

Positioned on a shady street right next to Honiball Attorneys, the Honey Ball is a coffee shop, restaurant, and event venue with a twist. The café shares its space with Red Earth — an interior design, decor, and gift shop — so guests can browse for birthday presents and paint swatches while enjoying a delicious meal.

The Honey Ball has a cheerful garden scattered with tables, plants, and funky little garden ornaments. Limpopo’s mild climate means you can eat outside on most days, even in the middle of winter. And this garden is the perfect place to enjoy the Honey Ball’s spectacular menu dreamed up by the cafés owners, Lizanne Lourens and Nan Schoeman.

The French toast, perfect disks of homemade bread dipped in egg custard and smothered with cheese and golden syrup, will impress even the most discerning city food critic. The Honey Ball’s breakfast menu is also known for its omelettes, flapjacks, scones, several kinds of Eggs Benedict, and the comically named “Cheezo”: Ciabatta bread topped with bacon, cheese, and two poached eggs. The lunch menu includes simple favourites like quiche, lasagna, burgers, steak, and a variety of pastas. Everything on the menu costs less than R100. The Honey Ball serves coffee from AfricaBlack, a well-known coffee bean roastery in Johannesburg, and also sells AfricaBlack beans by the bag.

The café also produces a fantastic array of baked goods, both for in-store customers and for special events. The Honey Ball has a variety of spaces, both inside and outside, for meetings and events and also provides catering for the area.

Red Earth Decor and Design occupies the entrance hall at the Honey Ball and the room is stuffed with clever, homey gifts — local art, jewelry, coffee cups, bath products, bags, dishes, and more. It’s difficult to leave this shop empty-handed. Red Earth also stocks Annie Sloan Vintage paints, perfect for restoring antique furniture, as well as home furnishings and a wide variety of fabrics for upholstering.

The Honey Ball does not have wifi, so you’ll have to switch off your phone and actually talk to real people while eating there. Take advantage of the opportunity.

The Honey Ball is at 128 Hooge Street, Mokopane, and is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (closed Sundays).
