Cheap Eats: Casual Meals in Haenertsburg
Haenertsburg is not a fine-dining kind of town. It’s the kind of town where you spend the day exploring outdoors — fishing, hiking, birdwatching, or zip-lining — then kick back at lunch or dinner with a pizza and a craft beer. Luckily there are lots of great places in Haenertsburg to enjoy a casual meal like this.
Lekwar Restaurant
Perched below a hill, Lekwar is a quaint, log-cabin-style restaurant right next to the R71 across from downtown Haenertsburg. Guests reach the restaurant by walking a long wooden footbridge over a marsh. Lekwar has a sports-bar feel to it and serves up tasty burgers and pancakes with strong wifi and plenty of outdoor seating.
Lekwar Restaurant is on the R71 in Haenertsburg, just west of Rissik Street. When turning left on the R71 from Rissik Street, Lekwar will soon appear on the right. Call 015-276-1102.
The Village Kitchen
The Village Kitchen is right in town — on Rissik Street near the top of the hill. The Village Kitchen serves gourmet-ish daytime meals (open for breakfast and lunch only) and adjoins a fabulous second-hand bookshop and gift shops. Stop in for lunch or dessert and designate a solid a half-hour for browsing.
The Village Kitchen is at the corner of Rissik and Mare Streets.
The Pot and Plow
Straight out of the English countryside, the Pot & Plow is a proper British pub a few miles north of Haenertsburg on the R71, complete with a regular group of locals drinking pints around the bar. The Pot & Plow is famous for its pizzas and they don’t disappoint. Grab a seat in the beer garden on sunny days.
The Pot and Plow is on the R71, about eight kilometres north of Haenertsburg. Email thepotandplow@gmail.com.
Iron Crown Pub
Another locals-only joint where everybody knows your name, the Iron Crown is on the main drag in Haenertsburg. Try the famous “the Haenertsburger”, a handmade patty topped with 100% local ingredients, or another of the wide selection of both meat and meat-free burgers. The Iron Crown also serves steaks, curries, and classic Yorkshire pot pies.
The Iron Crown is on Rissik Street, not far from the intersection of the R71.
